Light the Night
Light it. Hype it. Own it.
Job Title: Lighting Technician
Position Type: Part-Time Hourly
Schedule: Primarily Friday & Saturday nights with limited weekday hours for maintenance and programming
Job Overview
Scorpio’s is seeking a passionate and musically-minded Lighting Technician to run and maintain our lighting systems across the venue—including our main stage, parlor, rooftop, and veranda. You’re not just flipping switches—you’re producing the entire visual experience. The energy, the build-up, the drop, the drama—it’s in your hands. If the DJ is the heartbeat, you’re the pulse.
You must understand music beyond just hearing it—you feel the stanzas, the tempo changes, the emotional rise and fall of every track. You’ll use this knowledge to create lighting sequences that elevate the room and electrify the crowd. During the week, you’ll help fine-tune and maintain our lighting systems, add new fixtures, and build fresh programming to keep the venue’s energy evolving.
This is not a behind-the-scenes role. You are every bit as critical to the night as the DJ—and we treat you like it.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate lighting consoles during live events in sync with the DJ and performances across multiple rooms (Main Stage, Parlor, Rooftop, Veranda).
- Build and execute lighting sequences that follow the energy and phrasing of the music—understanding breakdowns, drops, stanzas, and transitions.
- Create immersive lighting environments that enhance drag shows, DJ sets, dance floors, and special performances.
- Set up and operate lasers, moving heads, strobes, LEDs, and video walls during events.
- Manage cues and visual transitions in coordination with music and live performances.
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on lighting rigs and fixtures.
- Program new lighting scenes and update existing sequences during off-nights or scheduled weekday hours.
- Maintain and organize DMX cable runs, fixtures, and backstage lighting tech areas.
- Assist with the installation of new lights and visual equipment when upgrades are scheduled.
- Keep all show control equipment running smoothly and report any issues immediately to management.
- Support other departments (sound, video, special effects) during major events or tech-heavy nights.
Technical Requirements
- Proficient in DMX lighting systems, club lighting, and intelligent fixture programming.
- Experience using ShowXpress (required).
- Familiarity with Pangolin laser control software (preferred).
- Working knowledge of Resolume video wall software (preferred).
- Solid understanding of light rigging, electrical safety, and basic AV troubleshooting.
- Ability to quickly adapt to unexpected changes in music, performance timing, or venue needs.
Soft Skills & Expectations
- Deep musical awareness—can recognize tempo, mood, and transitions instinctively.
- High attention to detail under pressure in fast-paced nightclub environments.
- Must be punctual, reliable, and able to work late-night hours (typically 9 PM–2:30 AM on weekends).
- Professional demeanor with a passion for show production and guest experience.
- Ability to work solo with limited supervision or as part of a light crew.
- Must be sober and alert while operating equipment during all shifts.
- Available for occasional weekday daytime or evening hours for programming and maintenance.
